Faux Finish Pictures - July 8, 1999

In recent e-mails from Orlando, Marcy told me that she was applying a faux finish to some walls at her daughter's house. Since I wasn't very familiar with the technique, she sent these photos to illustrate.

The effect that you see is produced by using glazes applied, in this case, with a plastic bag. Other effects can be achieved with sponges or rags...even feathers.

Sully seems to enjoy watching the process.
End Result

The end result is a dramatic effect that can't be achieved by simply painting a room. And it would be virtually impossible to find wallpaper that has the same impact...not to mention the desired colors.
Marcy

Last year, I used Complete Home Designer software to produce a virtual 3-D model of my kitchen and to experiment with new cabinets and color schemes. Without knowing about faux finishing, I experimented with some digitally scanned samples that came with the package and I found one similar to this dining room wall that I really liked. I just figured that there was no way I'd ever find wallpaper like that and was ready to resign myself to settling for less. Well...not any more!

Here's a closeup to give you a better idea of how beautiful this finishing process is. Congratulations, Marcy, on a job well done!
