Fr. Bob Kurber taught religion classes at St. Anthony High School in the early 1960s and Joe McClellan ('61) has stayed in contact with him ever since. On a recent visit with Fr. Bob in Orlando, Joe took some photos to share with us and he wrote:
"Father Kurber and I had lunch and I asked him to take
me on a tour of his beautiful church. A simple church but a very beautiful church in its own
right. Reminded me of what churches use to be, a meeting place for
the community, where neighbors discussed concerns and spread the word on who
needed help in the community. Father Kurber helps funeral homes with service, for people
that can't get a parish priest because they have not attended church. Father Kurber always tries to find out something about the
deceased before the service. He drove 50 miles from his home to a funeral home that had a
parking lot full of bikes! The deceased was a small framed man. He met his 4 sons. When the deceased was young, he noticed a boy wandering
around his neighborhood. The boy was dirty and had no shoes. The man started out giving the boy candy. Then fed him. Eventually he took the boy in plus 3 additional boys that he
noticed in the same predicament. He told the 4 boys that there are rules that must be
followed. 1. Always be clean. 2. Go to school, study hard. 3 graduated from college. 3. No fighting. 4. Dinner is at 6:00PM. Then the kitchen closes. One of the men said that they never fought as children. They describe this man and how he lived! Enjoy the pictures. Joe PS I always feel better about the world after visiting with Father Kurber." |
